Hackathons
I like building things
I attended 7+ hackathons. People from around the country would come together and build incredible things in 2-3 days. It was eye-opening to see the endless possibilities brought to life by a group of motivated and passionate individuals.

Helios — Peer-to-peer Electricity Trading with Blockchain Technology. Aiming to democratize access to renewable energy, we designed a system that enables peer-to-peer solar energy trading. Through a shared economy model, solar energy producers can recover their initial investment by selling excess production to their neighbors, while consumers gain access to solar energy at a much lower price than from the grid. Currently, solar producers sell excess energy at about 4 cents/kWh, while consumers buy electricity from the grid at around 12 cents/kWh (excluding taxes). Given this large gap and recent legislation favoring energy communities (Decree-Law No. 15/2022), this is a unique market opportunity to implement our solution. We believe that with growing public concern about climate change, more legislation will be published to benefit such projects. Our solution consists of a system made up of a building's (already existing) private network, smart meters that measure electricity production and consumption and facilitate the exchange, a platform where consumers can choose to buy solar energy, and a (private) blockchain where tokens are exchanged according to the electricity to be purchased. There are already similar solutions worldwide (e.g., Brooklyn Microgrid, Centrica plc), so we can guarantee the technology exists (see also this report). In Portugal, we would be the first mover to apply blockchain technology to direct solar energy trading systems. In recent months, after the publication of Decree-Law No. 15/2022, we have already seen this market evolve in Portugal, with news that GreenVolt will have the largest energy community in Europe in Comporta. It is our vision that such initiatives will become increasingly common. - B
